Controversial Assisted Dying Bill Heads to UK Parliament

Published on: 16 October, 2024

Labour Party MP Kim Leadbeater puts forward her bill covering England and Wales on assisted dying to parliament, with a debate and initial vote taking place later this year.

The law is expected to allow mentally competent, terminally ill adults in England and Wales with six months or less left to live to choose whether to end their lives and allow medics to help them.

Under current law, assisting suicide is punishable by up to 14 years in jail.

It would have to be approved by MPs and peers in the House of Lords before it becomes law.

In Europe, euthanasia is legal in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany and Spain.

Assisted dying, where someone is given the means to end their life themselves, is legal in Switzerland.

Austria, Finland, and Norway allow passive euthanasia under strict circumstances.
