The Bab al Hawa border crossing between Turkiye and Syria is closed, ending a lifeline of UN-delivered aid to the 4.1 m people who live in rebel-held northwest of the country.

The UN Security Council failed to renew a mandate for shipments of humanitarian aid to North West Syria using the Bab-al Hawa crossing, a day after the crossing closed at the end of its last mandate.

The UN and aid groups say 85% of humanitarian goods arrived by this route.

There were two competing proposals to keep the crossing open: one proposed by Brazil and Switzerland that would have kept it open for 9 months, which Russia vetoed (and China abstained), and a second by China and Russia that would have kept it open for 6 months with requirements to investigate sanctions against Syria, which US, UK, and France vetoed.
