Fighting has resumed in the DR Congo’s north-east. between government forces and the armed group M23.

It’s focused around Goma, a city of more than 1 million near the border with Rwanda.

M23 forces reportedly are pushing toward the town of Sake, 20km north-west of Goma.

If it falls, road links to Goma will be cut off.

The Congolese government accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23, which Kigali denies.

Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and South Sudan have deployed troops to the region.

Angola is sending soldiers in the coming days.

The fighting displaced 300,000 last month alone, according to the UNCHR.

Regional bloc the East African Community has set a March 20 deadline for M23 to withdraw from around Goma.

It’s already ignored one EAC deadline and is not expected to meet this latest demand.
