Ugandan border officials say 8,000 refugees have crossed into Uganda via the Bunagana border with D.R. Congo following the M23 rebels’ attacks in northeastern D.R. Congo.

M23 are reported to have begun attacks on at least four different Congolese army positions on Sunday night and are thought to be only a few KM from the border with Uganda.

The Ugandan army says it has deployed along the border and that no restrictions will be issued on those seeking to flee.

The Congolese authorities in Kinshasa summoned the Rwandan ambassador on Monday to explain the alleged support of Rwanda to the rebels of the M23 group.

Later on Monday, the Rwandan govt released a statement denying allegations that they are supporting M23 fighters in D.R. Congo.

Attacks by M23 fighters in November 2021 lead to thousands of refugees crossing into Uganda.
