The newly-seated city council in Hamtramck, Michigan is all Muslim – a historic first for a Detroit region known for its
large immigrant population and an apparent first for any city in the United States.
The city’s newly elected Mayor Amer Ghalib, is also Muslim, dramatically increasing representation for a largely Muslim population.
The council members have said they will not allow religion to play a role in their decisions, a position that is reminiscent of the first Catholic president, John F. Kennedy, who said he would not allow his decisions to be colored by the views of the Vatican.
