Poland begins construction of a 180km long, 5.5m-high wall on its border with Belarus.
The move comes in response to December’s stand-off with Belarus over attempts by thousands of refugees from Middle East countries trying to access the EU.
Work will be carried out at high speed, three shifts a day, seven days a week, with the aim of completing the wall by next summer.
The wall will be patrolled by troops, fitted with motion sensors and night-vision cameras, replacing a 2.5m-high barrier of barbed wire.
It’s a move sure to inflame tensions with Brussels on top of a stated policy of pushbacks, illegal under international law.
