Biden says China will pay price for human rights abuses

Published on: 17 February, 2021

US President Joe Biden stated on Wednesday that China will pay a price for human rights abuses committed. Biden made this statement while responding to questions on China’s handling of the Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. The statements, made during a town hall event, were televised by CNN.

Biden stated that there will be ‘repercussions’ for China’s President Xi Jinping.

China has long been criticised for human rights abuses committed against the Uighurs including detaining Uighurs in internment camps.

Biden further voiced concern over China’s ‘coercive and unfair’ trade practices. He also mentioned China’s crackdown on Hong Kong and its increasing aggressive actions towards Taiwan.

China has denied that it is committing human rights abuses against the Uighurs and has said that it is aiming to stamp out ‘Islamic extremism.’
