Zambia is experiencing power cuts of up to 21 hours a day, and the government has warned of worse to come, largely thanks to low water levels at Kariba dam. The hydropower dam accounts for 85% of the country’s power supply. The government declared a state of emergency in MAR, saying drought has devastated food production and electricity generation.
Zimbabwe has also been affected, as the dam provides power for much of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Southern Africa is struggling with the region’s worst drought in decades.
El Nino is the prime culprit.
Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Lesotho have all declared states of disaster.
Around 68 million people across the region need food aid.
