Hundreds of mostly Venezuelan migrants heading towards the US by bus are being extorted by police and stopped by Mexican migration officials, in spite of them having transit visas.

The migrants were granted humanitarian transit visas that allow them to reach Mexico’s border with the US, where they can apply for asylum.

Videos on social media show policemen pulling them off buses, extorting them and threatening them with deportation.

In one video, a policeman says they do that “under pressure from the American government”.

On June 11, Mexican immigration authorities disbanded a migrant caravan of at least 7,000 people.
