The UK and Canadian governments are co-chairing an international three-day virtual summit of the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) to boost international commitment to shift away from coal power generation ahead of the UN COP26 conference in the UK in NOV 2021.

The PPCA Summit is billed as the year’s largest global gathering on coal power phase-out. UN Sec Gen Antonio Guterres will address the delegates.

But the UK government’s position on coal phase-out is being badly undermined by its support for opening a brand new coal mine in Whitehaven, Cumbria, the first new coal mine in 30 years. The government’s dilemma is that the project.
