GENEVA, 28 July 2025 — Iran has executed at least 612 people in the first half of 2025, more than doubling last year’s figures, the UN says.

Minorities and those convicted on vague charges like “enmity against God” remain disproportionately affected.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk called for an immediate moratorium, citing unfair trials and secret proceedings.

He also condemned a draft espionage bill that would expand the death penalty to include online communication and foreign media contact.

Türk urged Iran to halt executions and join the global move to abolish capital punishment, stressing it violates human dignity and the right to life.
