According to the AP, more than 700,000 Palestinians fled or were forced from their homes during the conflict that surrounded Israel’s creation.

Sunday marks what Palestinians call ‘the Nakba’ or ‘Catastrophe’ – known as Nakba Day – the date the state of Israel was declared in Palestine in 1948.

Aljazeera on Sunday posthumously aired a piece produced by Abu Akleh on the Nakba, which marks Israel’s 1948 declaration of independence.

Sunday also marks one year since Israeli forces bombed AJ’s bureau in Gaza – a building which also housed the Associated Press and local residents’ homes.
