Right-wing Israelis stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and a United Nations facility for Palestinian refugees on Monday, coinciding with an annual march marking Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem.
The provocative display came as thousands took part in “Jerusalem Day”, which commemorates Israel’s occupation and subsequent annexation of the eastern part of the city following the 1967 war.
Marchers, some chanting slogans such as “Death to Arabs” and “May your village burn”, passed through the alleyways of the Old City, including the Muslim Quarter, under heavy police protection. Thousands of heavily armed police and border officers had been deployed in anticipation of violence, as settlers participating in the march are frequently accused of assaulting and harassing Palestinians and vandalising their shops.
Many of the demonstrators reside in Israeli settlements and outposts across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem—settlements that are considered illegal under international law.
