The ICC’s chief prosecutor is urgently investigating allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Darfur city of al-Fashir which has become a new front between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a video statement released Tuesday, prosecutor Karim Khan said the ICC had an active investigation into possible atrocity crimes being committed in Darfur.
Al-Fashir is home to more than 1.8 million residents and displaced people and is the latest front in a war between the Sudanese army and the RSF.
The number of people displaced by the war in Sudan could top 10 million in the coming days, a/c to the UN, which warned of looming famine as a result of the ongoing violence. More than two million people have crossed borders into neighbouring countries, incl Chad, South Sudan and Egypt.
The upcoming rainy season, it said, would exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and could lead to climate-related disasters and the spread of disease.
