On February 26, 2026, a coalition spearheaded by the UK, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Norway emerged with a resolute commitment to prevent further atrocities in Sudan and promote justice in the region.

The urgency of their mission cannot be overstated, as civilians remain vulnerable to grave abuses perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), including targeted drone strikes against humanitarian aid convoys and critical civilian infrastructure, as documented by Human Rights Watch between February and March 2026.

To effectively safeguard civilians, the coalition must prioritize tangible actions. First and foremost, it is essential to disrupt the flow of illicit arms, which fuels ongoing violence. Additionally, fostering political momentum for a UN Security Council-authorized mission to protect these vulnerable populations is crucial.

Support should also be directed towards local responders who are on the front lines, providing aid and assistance, as well as ensuring that the pursuit of justice is integrated into political dialogues. This includes advocating for expanded jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the implementation of universal jurisdiction cases.

The situation in Sudan demands immediate and decisive action. Without credible deterrence and robust intervention, the civilian population will continue to bear the brunt of this crisis, suffering severely as the conflict further escalates. The time for proactive measures is now, as inaction may lead to irreversible consequences.
