Spanish Resolution Challenges Israel’s Compliance Amid Gaza Crisis

Published on: 12 June, 2025

The Spanish-led draft resolution before the UN General Assembly comprises 21 operative paragraphs and renews the call for an immediate ceasefire—an appeal the Assembly has repeatedly made.

Central to the resolution is paragraph 10, which “stresses the need for accountability in order to ensure Israel’s respect of international law obligations,” urging all Member States to take “individually and collectively all measures necessary, in line with international law and the Charter of the United Nations,” to guarantee Israel’s compliance.

Beyond this pivotal clause, the resolution condemns the use of starvation as a weapon of war (paragraph 5) and calls upon Israel, as the occupying power, to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need in coordination with the United Nations (paragraph 6).

The proposal aims to galvanize international action and accountability, but it remains uncertain whether the Assembly’s recommendations will prompt tangible change on the ground.
