South Africa had been celebrating Freedom Day on Saturday- the 30th anniversary of the country’s democratic era.
It commemorates the first democratic election in 1994. But 30 years on, many argue the African National Congress has failed to deliver.
Unemployment, the high cost of living, rampant crime, and corruption continue to afflict many by casting a shadow over the promise of a better future from the Party that saw Nelson Mandela become the country’s first democratically elected president with nearly 63% of the vote.
But on May29 at the next election, the ANC may lose its parliamentary majority, according to some opinion polls.
