Sana’a’s controversial execution

Published on: 21 February, 2024

Human rights defender Fatima Saleh Al-Arwali’s execution is scheduled to take place in Tahrir Square in Sana’a.

“The Huthi de facto authorities must ensure that woman human rights defender Fatma al-Arwali receives a fair trial in line with international standards or is immediately released,” Amnesty International said.

The authorities in Sana’a says she was held under charges of collaborating with the enemy.

Al-Arwali was the head of the Habitat Organization for Human Rights Development, and the former head of the Yemen office of the Women’s Leadership Union.

In recent years, she has documented and publicly denounced the recruitment of children and human rights violations against women captured by the Houthi movement.

She had no legal representation at the trial, and her family has only been able to contact her twice from detention since she was arrested in August 2022.

UN experts urged the Ansar Allah or Houthi movement – de facto authorities in Sana’a and much of northern Yemen – to halt the imminent execution, saying it would constitute an arbitrary execution and a flagrant violation of international human rights law and standards.
