Leading scientists have discovered a contender for the oldest living creature on earth, a Patagonian Cyrus, or Alerce Tree, found in a remote part of Patagonia.

The tree, nicknamed Great Grandfather, is said to be more than 600 years older than the current record holder, but more significantly, it is part of a project meant to demonstrate how centuries-old trees can help better predict climate change.
