Countries, plastics industry representatives, and NGOs convene in Paris for the week-long second round of negotiations toward agreeing on a treaty that would tackle plastic pollution, which would be signed in 2024.
One approach is to reduce and ban specific high-risk plastics, identified through research, which lasts for far longer in the environment than their initial use (like single-use plastics products).
That would require encouraging the production of life-long products at scale, as well as penalties for violators.
The goal is to phase out these plastic products by 2035.
