In Indian Administered Kashmir the centuries-old Jamia Mosque has remained closed for most of the last 2 years after
the Indian government removed the region’s semiautonomous status in 2019.
For some Indian government officials the mosque, a symbol of faith for most in the region, has become a source of inspiration for violent protests that challenge the government. While all other mosques have been allowed to offer religious services, Jamia Mosque in Srinagar city remains out of bounds for worshippers who say this undermines their constitutional right to religious freedom.
