China’s human rights record’s review by a panel of UN experts over two days in Geneva .
The review started Wednesday and will end today Thursday.
China is to send a delegation to defend itself.
The UN’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, made up of 18 independent experts, monitors the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the UN treaty to which China is
a signatory.
It falls under the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
Background includes widespread criticism, including from the OHCHR, on China’s treatment of the Uyghur community in Xinjiang.
A report by the OHCHR released in August 2022 found China had committed ‘serious human rights violations’ in Xinjiang.
