(AP Photo/Aung Shine Oo) Kyaukme, a once-thriving town in Myanmar’s Shan State, is in shambles, targeted by both sides in the Southeast Asian country’s bitter civil war because of its strategic location at a key junction on the trading route to China.
A group of civil society organisations in Myanmar is suing Norwegian telecoms group Telenor in Norway, accusing it of giving the country’s military the personal data of thousands of customers.
They allege that the Myanmar regime used the data to find and detain pro-democracy activists.
Many were tortured, and at least two were executed.
Netherlands-based nonprofit Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations is backing the case.
