New Zealand’s parliament is set to vote on whether to suspend three Māori MPs following a haka performed during the reading of a controversial bill last year.

The vote is expected to pass with the backing of the ruling conservative coalition.

Opposition MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke initiated the haka after being asked whether her party supported legislation—since defeated—that would have redefined the country’s founding document, the Treaty of Waitangi.

A parliamentary committee has ruled that the haka could have “intimidated” other lawmakers. It has recommended a one-week suspension for Maipi-Clarke, and 21-day bans for Te Pāti Māori (Māori Party) co-leaders Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer.

The Māori Party has condemned the move, calling it a “warning shot to all of us to fall in line”.
