India’s main opposition party has called for a week of protests over rising prices, the latest in a series of demonstrations in the region over the cost of living.

The opposition Indian National Congress claims the government delayed fuel price rises, to avoid losing votes during recent state elections.

Popular protests have also broken out in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in recent days.

They have their particular causes, but the overriding theme is rising prices for fuel and food – a result of the pandemic, mismanagement and now the impact of the Ukraine conflict.
