Nearly 3 million people have fled fighting around the capital Khartoum to seek safety in foreign countries – or other parts of Sudan.

They include the states of the Red Sea and Gezira. Sudanese authorities and local aid organisations are trying to alleviate the suffering – despite limited resources.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed and WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain are expected to visit Adre, as refugees from Sudan continue to cross into Chad.

More than 230,000 refugees and 38,000 returnees have crossed into Chad from Sudan since the start of the conflict in April 2023, according to the UN, fleeing what the UN says might constitute crimes against humanity.
