Mexico City, one of the most populated cities in the world (21 million), is facing an unprecedented water shortage.
Its network of pumping plants, water dams and other infrastructure, the Cutzamala system, is the most stressed it’s even been.
It’s currently at 39% of capacity – this time last year, it was 51%. And the rainy season is not expected until June.
Last year, the government even tried to induce rain by spraying a chemical mix into the clouds, with questionable results. With recent seasons drier than ever, the reservoirs had no chance at rebounding during the summer months.
