Mexico Grapples With Its Worst Measles Outbreak in Decades

Published on: 8 July, 2025

Mexico is in the midst of its largest measles outbreak in decades—a disease the country had officially eradicated in 2016. Around 3,000 cases have been reported so far, with at least nine confirmed deaths.

The outbreak has been concentrated in Mennonite communities in the northern state of Chihuahua, where skepticism of vaccines and distrust of authorities runs deep.

In response, health officials have begun going door to door to offer vaccinations.

The government has announced the purchase of 23 million vaccine doses for adults and 3.5 million for children, in the hope of accelerating the campaign.

The outbreak comes amid a broader resurgence of measles in North America. Both the United States and Canada have seen a growing number of cases, fuelling renewed debate over vaccine hesitancy in some communities.

Measles remains one of the most contagious infectious diseases known.
