On Tuesday, northeast Indian state Manipur’s governor will convene a special session of the Manipur state legislative assembly – the first since the crisis began – after pressure from majority Meitei civil society groups.
The legislative assembly is likely to pass a resolution against Kuki tribals demands for a separate administration.
The assembly, dominated by majority Meitei legislators is also likely to press for a national register of citizens to identify so called “illegal immigrants”.
The 10 Kuki-Zo legislators are likely to not attend this session.
All of them had to leave the capital, Imphal, and move to other states or tribal dominated areas due to concerns about their safety.
The resolution to preserve the territorial integrity of Manipur is also likely to see opposition from Naga legislators. In Manipur, a majority of the tribals come from the Naga tribes.
