Campaigners fighting to preserve Europe’s largest seawater lagoon have made a major legal breakthrough.

Mar Menor in southern Spain now has the same legal rights as a person.

It’s the first time a European natural site has attained such status — the hope is it can be used to defend the lagoon’s fragile ecosystem from the effects of human activity.
