Lampedusa in Italy has seen an unprecedented number of refugees and migrants arriving from Africa.

The United Nations says 8,500 people arrived on nearly 200 boats last week.

Authorities are racing against the clock to transfer the migrants to other parts of Italy, while more migrants keep reaching the island.

Meloni will be holding a government meeting in Rome with Italian ministers focusing on immigration policies.

Meloni invited Ursula von der Leyen to visit the island, hoping she could accelerate the deployment of EU funds promised to Tunisia in exchange for blocking migrants’ departure from the north African country.
