Brazil’s Supreme Court resumes voting on the landmark decision that will affect the future of hundreds of indigenous land claims in Brazil.

At the same time Brazilian indigenous people from several lands takes part in a protest during camp in Brasilia.

The ruling will decide whether indigenous people must have been living in the territories they claim as theirs before 1988, when the new democratic constitution was approved.

If the Supreme Court decides to set a cut-off date, hundreds of claims which are currently being examined – and some that have already resulted in the creation of reservations – may be annulled.

The trial started in 2021 and a ruling was delayed several times.

So far, 4 justices voted in favor of maintaining indigenous rights to ancestral land, while two voted against. The trial will be over once all 11 justices have voted.
