The Hague: The UN’s top court, the International Court of Justice, continues oral proceedings on the consequences of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. More than 50 states and at least three international organisations are due to address the judges, before the issuing of a non-binding legal opinion.
While Israel has ignored such opinions in the past, it could pile on political pressure over its ongoing war in Gaza.
The hearings are part of a Palestinian push to get international legal institutions to examine Israel’s conduct.
The court’s assessment will not address the current situation but exclusively address the issue of the Israeli occupation, as the request for these hearings was made before October 7th, 2023.
