The UN is holding a conference to raise money for humanitarian needs in Afghanistan. It’s seeking $4.4 billion, the most it has requested for a single country.
International aid to Afghanistan has dried up since the Taliban seized power in August 2021, and humanitarian needs have spiraled since then.
The UN estimates 23 million people are experiencing acute hunger.
This pledging conference – co-hosted by Qatar, the UK and Germany – may struggle to revive the appetite to help.
Just last week the Taliban reversed its decision to allow girls back into high school, a key demand of the donor community.
The UK on Wednesday pledged an additional USD 310million of emergency aid for vital assistance in Afghanistan.
