UN Security Council holds an open debate on its recent report on Children in Armed Conflict.

The report released JUN 13, for the first time named Israel on the list of shame.

Expected briefers include Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Virginia Gamba, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Catherine Russell and former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

The report provides a critical snapshot of the ongoing crisis of children caught in the crossfire of armed conflict.

It highlights the six grave violations against children: killing and maiming, recruitment and use, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access.

In the past, Israel’s exclusion from this list has been a point of controversy and criticism, as Israel has been documented to have caused significant harm to Palestinian children.

The reported also included Hamas’ Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s Al-Quds Brigades for killing and maiming children and abductions.

Other countries including Sudan and Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar, Somalia, and Nigeria are other conflict zones which the United Nations report highlights as being places of immense suffering for children.

The Open Debate format allows all 193 UN Member States to attend and can request to speak.
