Protesting farmers in India have forced the government to withdraw fines for burning their crop stubble after the summer harvest. Every autumn, thousands of farm fires in northern India cause air pollution to rise to toxic levels. Farmers say they’re forced to burn the paddy stubble because they don’t have viable alternatives to prepare their soil in time for the winter season. But some in Punjab have found a way to not just get rid of the stubble but produce electricity in the process.
