Ethiopia’s landslides

Published on: 24 July, 2024

Recovery operations continue following two landslides in southwest Ethiopia that killed at least 157 people.

Officials said the death toll was likely to rise.

The landslides struck July 21st and 22nd after heavy rains in a remote mountainous area of the Gofa zone.

Women, children and police officers are among the dead.

It’s the country’s worst such natural disaster since floods and landslides killed more than 200 in 2016.

Gofa is around 320km south-west of the capital Addis Ababa.

It has suffered heavy rain and flooding in recent months.
