President Biden signed into law a bill that makes lynching, specifically conspiracy to commit a hate crime that leads to death or injury, a federal hate crime on Tuesday evening.
The new law is called the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, after a black youth who was murdered in Mississippi in 1955.
Attempts to pass federal laws condemning and punishing lynching have been made and rejected in Congress since 1900.
The Emmitt Till Anti-Lynching Act was sponsored by Kamala Harris and Sen Cory Booker.
