Eastern African leaders are set to meet in Burundi over the escalation of fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels in the past week.
The urgent meeting has been called by the Burundi President who doubles as Chairman of the East Africa Community.
The leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and DRC have confirmed their attendance. Rwanda has as well (50-50 if he will show up).
Since Monday the Congolese army has been fighting the M23 rebels seeking to retake Kitshanga town from the M23 with no success.
The M23 took control of Kitshanga on Thursday last week and has continued to capture a few other small areas in the last 48 hrs.
The Luanda and Nairobi-led peace process is on the verge of collapse with DRC and the M23 rebels/Rwanda accusing each other of stalling the process.
The East African Forces deployed in Goma since November 2022 are also under fire for a perceived failure to engage and push back the M23.
There have been street demos against them in recent weeks.
