Contaminated Syrup Trial

Published on: 7 November, 2023

Trial is expected to begin over contaminated syrups imported from India causing the deaths of at least 73 children aged 5 years or younger in The Gambia.

The trial was to start on October 24 but was adjourned, due to the absence of three accused representing the state.

Nineteen plaintiffs representing family members of the victims are suing Indian drug maker Maiden Pharmaceuticals as well as local health authorities.

The families are seeking 15 million dialysis (around $230,000) per child in damages.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says laboratory tests revealed “unacceptable amounts” of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which are commonly used as antifreeze and can be fatal if ingested by causing kidney failure.
