Climate Ambition Summit

Published on: 17 September, 2023

The first-ever UN Climate Ambition Summit will be held in the following days on the sidelines of UNGA.

After the hottest summer on record, numerous fires around the globe, severe storms, etc., activists from around the world are converging in New York City during UNGA to target world leaders, particularly from rich countries.

They point to the U.S., UK, Canada and Norway all expanding their fossil fuel use, and failing to live up to their commitments, financial and otherwise, under the Paris Accord.

Activists want to heighten UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for countries to commit to no new fossil fuels and to end subsidies for fossil fuels.

The week will feature events in New York City and worldwide.

The march comes ahead of the UN Secretary General’s Climate Ambition Summit in New York – the first-ever climate summit where countries are expected to present fossil fuel phaseout plans and commit to no new fossil fuel production.
