Blue Helmets in the Crossfire

An Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper was killed and another critically injured on 29 March 2026 when a projectile of unknown origin struck their position near Adchit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
The incident is part of a pattern of escalating attacks on UN personnel since Lebanon was drawn into the broader Middle East war in early March.
Secretary-General Guterres condemned the killing as a potential war crime and called for accountability, while the WHO reported that 51 Lebanese health workers had been killed since 2 March. The structural irony is stark: UNIFIL is dying in defence of a mission already voted to termination by December 2026.
