The High Court in India’s northeast Assam state is to respond to a case that accuses local police officers of faking gunfights, arrests, and raids to cover up the deaths of at least 28 people, with many others injured.

The killings took place between May last year and Jan this year.

Assam’s main opposition party claims that a majority of those killed by police were from ethnic and religious minorities.

Rights activists say the killings have been going on since the BJP won the election last year and claim local government officials are complicit.
