A final agreement to be signed between military leaders and political parties who are signatories to the framework agreement signed Dec 5th.

It would then be followed by the signing of a transitional constitution and the formation of a new transitional government at a later date.

Despite progress, there’s still disagreement over integrating the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces into the regular military.

The paramilitary group wants at least a decade before it is fully under the military while the military wants all armed groups to be absorbed within two years.

There is also the issue of ranks and commands.

The RSF wants their officers to preserve their ranks when integrated into the army and the army wants a reassessment of the officers.

Who the senior RSF officers get their orders from is also a point of contention.

Protests are taking place in Khartoum and other cities, commemorating the fourth anniversary of the two-month sit-in at army headquarters.

The sit-in led to the ousting of long-time president Omar Albashir just days later and after months of protests.

It’s also the 38th anniversary of the revolution that ended the rule of military leader Jaafar Nimeiry in 1985.
