Angola’s Fuel Fury
A sharp rise in fuel prices has triggered deadly unrest in Angola.
At least 22 people were reportedly killed during protests in Luanda and elsewhere, as security forces allegedly used live rounds and tear gas to quell demonstrations. Over 1,000 people have been detained, raising alarms over possible arbitrary arrests and excessive use of force.
Though some protesters resorted to violence and criminal acts—including looting and vandalism—reports of disproportionate repression cast a shadow over the authorities’ response.
The government is urged to conduct independent investigations into the deaths and to uphold fundamental civil liberties, including freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
Maintaining order must not come at the cost of human rights.
Arbitrarily detained individuals should be released, and any abuse by security forces must be properly addressed.
