The UK’s Met Office has issued a first-ever red extreme heat warning over record high temperatures expected on Monday
and Tuesday.

For the first time, temperatures of 40°C have been forecast. The UK government is drawing up plans for an emergency response to the heatwave which could see disruption to health services and the cancellation of outdoor events.

Authorities across southern Europe worked on Sunday to control huge wildfires in countries including Spain, Greece,
Portugal and France, where thousands of people have been evacuated in soaring temperatures.

France is currently undergoing its second heatwave of the year and a dire episode of drought, which makes the country more vulnerable to bushfires, like the rest of Southern Europe.

In their sixth report published this year, the IPCC scientists said that human-induced climate change would lead to an increase in extreme weather catastrophes.

Scientists say there is evidence that the increase in heatwaves over Europe is three to four times faster than in other mid-latitude regions such as the US.

World Meteorological Organisation official said Europe’s heat wave will result in a rapid increase in atmospheric pollutants, especially in urban areas.
