Egypt arrested Al Jazeera journalist Rabie Al-Sheikh at Cairo airport on Sunday. Al-Sheikh, a producer at Al Jazeera Mubasher channel, was arrested upon his return from Doha for a family visit, reports Middle East Eye.
Al-Sheikh has been arrested on charges of ‘spreading false news’. He is currently being held in Tora prison.
Sheikh’s arrest happened days after an audio recording in which he invited an Egyptian columnist Abdel Nasser Salama to speak in a live interview about the Ethiopian dam crisis.
Salama was detained after calling for Egyptian president El-Sisi’s resignation in July over a ‘heavy defeat’ relating to Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam.
According to the Egyptian Network for Human Rights (ENHR) at least 65 journalists are now detained in Egypt.
