Zimbabwe has declared a state of emergency on November 17 in the capital, Harare, over a cholera outbreak – more than 150 suspected deaths and over 8,000 suspected cases reported since February.
The government has given the Harare City Council on November 21 a one-week ultimatum to remove street vendors off the streets saying the overcrowding of vendors was not helping the situation but rather aiding it.
The outbreak, spreading throughout the city, has invoked memories of a deadly outbreak in 2008, in which thousands died, city authorities said. Earlier this year, the UN said Cholera has experienced a global resurgence since 2021 after a decade of steady decline.
