Ten days after he was shot and killed by an Israeli settler, the body of Awdah Hathaleen, a 31-year-old Palestinian activist, has been released by Israeli authorities.

The handover followed a hunger strike led by a group of Palestinian women demanding the right to bury him.

The settler accused of the killing, which took place last month in the occupied West Bank, was briefly placed under house arrest before being released.

Hathaleen’s family claims the Israeli army made the release of his body conditional on a tightly controlled funeral held outside his home village—a restriction they see as part of a broader effort to suppress public displays of dissent.
