Various groups in Serbia, including students, teachers, and farmers, are planning to stage protests and block roads to express their anger over government policies, corruption, and the negligence they blame for the deaths of 15 people in a railway station disaster in November.
On Saturday, Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vučić stated that he would not yield to the month-long nationwide protests. During a press conference, Vučić promoted subsidies for flats or houses for young people, a move many have interpreted as an attempt to appease the growing discontent. On Friday, the Serbian government announced plans to close schools a week early for the winter holidays.
Protestors, including those participating in street demonstrations and university blockades, are demanding the resignation of the prime minister and the mayor of Novi Sad over the disaster. They also call for the prosecution of those responsible for the tragedy.
